African Americans in Charlotte and North Carolina: A Brief Reading List

Given recent events in Charlotte, we have developed a short reading list of scholarly texts on Black experiences in the Charlotte metropolitan area and North Carolina more generally. In focusing on Charlotte, we pay special attention to the Black experiences historically and contemporarily in the areas of economic development, education and law enforcement. In focusing on North Carolina we highlight key texts in the state’s history and experience with race, justice and protest. This list is not exhaustive. For further resources on Black lives in North Carolina, we direct you to the Stone Center LibrarySouthern Oral History Program and the Southern History Collection.
