February 6, 2017 @ 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm
Presented by Mishio Yamanaka
Brown Bag description:
In this lecture, Mishio Yamanaka will discuss the history of race and public education in New Orleans through the case of the Fillmore School, one of the city schools that underwent two desegregation attempts during Reconstruction and in the 1960s. Combining archival research, geographical analysis and oral interviews, she will examine the ways in which African American communities engaged in various grass-roots activism to reflect their voice in school politics.
